Release: Greitens out of his depth on agriculture

WRONG FOR MISSOURI: GREITENS OUT OF HIS DEPTH ON AGRICULTURE

Sedalia, MO — Today is the Governor’s annual Ham Breakfast at the State Fair – a big day for agriculture in the 2016 election. It’s a day for candidates to come out, show their ag chops, and speak to their policies on one of the pillars of a strong Missouri economy.

Chris Koster is ready to dive right in with a long history of standing up for farmers and the ag industry in backing Right to Farm and pushing back against the EPA.

Eric Greitens is poised for another devastating failure, given that his experience with ag and rural Missouri is the equivalent to visiting a petting zoo and a pumpkin patch.

“Eric Greitens’ answer to every question about agriculture is a promise to hire people who understand it better than him if he becomes Governor,” said MDP spokesperson Kristin Sosanie. “Think about that — agriculture is Missouri’s biggest industry, and Eric Greitens simply has no clue.”

Missouri is home to more than 100,000 farms located on more than 28 million acres of farmland. Understanding the ag economy is not just a rite of passage for a candidate running for governor, it’s an imperative for anyone seeking the state’s highest office. Greitens just doesn’t measure up.

“Missouri’s agricultural producers and rural residents deserve better than a candidate so out of his depth that he can only default to a standard Donald Trump brush off line when talking about Missouri’s major economic driver,” Sosanie continued. “On agriculture and rural issues, Eric Greitens is just wrong for Missouri.”

That’s why, for the first time ever, the Missouri Farm Bureau endorsed the Democratic candidate for Governor. That’s why Koster has earned the endorsement of the Soybean Association and the Corn Growers. And that’s why Koster continues to bring together Democrats AND Republicans together in rural and urban areas to support his campaign.

So pay attention to the Ham Breakfast today.

For Eric Greitens – if he shows up — it’s likely to be another day of stumbling on policy, bumbling on ag terminology, and promising to hire people who understand what he hasn’t taken the time to learn.

ON AGRICULTURE, ERIC GREITENS IS WRONG FOR MISSOURI

“Rural Missouri, largely a bastion for Republican voting in recent elections, is tasked with voting for a Republican nominee who, by his own admission, has no experience in agriculture-related issues.” [Hannibal-Courier-Post, 8/11/16]

“Members of the Missouri Farm Bureau’s political action committee voted to endorse Koster after listening to back-to-back presentations from him and Republican gubernatorial nominee Eric Greitens…Greitens acknowledged he had no rural background but told Farm Bureau members he would put together a team that understands agriculture and consider reappointing Fordyce.” [Associated Press, 8/11/16]

“Another agriculture-related organization in Missouri is flipping the script on an already out-of-the-ordinary race for the state’s highest office. In a high-profile race that features Republican-turned-Democrat Chris Koster and Democrat-turned-Republican Eric Greitens, state agriculture groups have so far bucked the norm by handing out endorsements to the Democratic nominee.” [Hannibal-Courier-Post, 8/11/16]

Kraske: “Koster just scooped up the endorsements of a plethora of groups that almost always go with the Republican: The Missouri Farm Bureau, Missouri Soybean Association And Missouri Corn Growers.” [Kansas City Star, Steve Kraske, 8/11/16]

“Koster winning the endorsement of the conservative-leaning Missouri Farm Bureau is a big disappointment for Greitens.” [Kansas City Star, 8/11/16]
