U.S. Sen. Eric Schmitt announced Monday that Missouri will receive $42.1 million in federal funding for improvements to Interstate 70 near St. Louis Lambert International Airport.

The funding, awarded through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s INFRA Grant Program, will support corridor and interchange improvements along I-70 from Cypress Road east of U.S. 67 to the upcoming Natural Bridge interchange west of I-170.

The project includes improvements at the I-70/Cypress Road, I-70/Airflight Drive and I-70/Natural Bridge Road interchanges, with the goal of improving traffic flow, safety and access to Lambert Airport.

Schmitt said he supported MoDOT’s application and worked with U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy to secure the funding.

The announcement comes as St. Louis continues planning major investments in Lambert Airport. MoDOT Director Ed Hassinger said the grant will help address needed improvements and make access to the airport more efficient.

Schmitt wrote Duffy in July urging approval of MoDOT’s application, arguing the project would strengthen the region’s connections to national air and roadway commerce while improving traffic along the I-70 corridor.
