Treasurer Schmitt making the “MOST” out of the new school year with sweepstakes promoting saving for education

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo — Missouri State Treasurer Eric Schmitt today announced the MOST 529 Savings Plan will award five lucky winners a $529 scholarship for the first annual MOST Back to School Sweepstakes running now through September 15. Missouri residents can enter for a chance to win by visiting MOSTsweeps.com.

“There’s no better way to start off the school year than with a little extra savings for education expenses,” Schmitt said. “Back to school season is the perfect time to get parents thinking about saving with a MOST 529 Plan, which is one of the goals of this sweepstakes. These scholarships will empower parents to kick-start their MOST accounts and make their child’s education more affordable.”

After winners have been selected, $529 will be contributed to the MOST 529 account of their choosing. Participants are not required to have a MOST account at the time of entry.

All winning account contributions will be invested in accordance with the rules of the MOST 529 Plan, and the beneficiaries can use the funds received for any qualified expense, including higher education costs and K-12 tuition.

The MOST 529 Savings Plan offers federal and state tax benefits, low costs and flexible ways to contribute. There are currently more than 163,000 funded MOST accounts with over $3 billion in assets under management through the program.

In January it was announced that the plan had been expanded to include K-12 tuition at public, private and religious schools as a qualified expense. Last month, Schmitt called on Congress to pass improvements to federal 529 laws that would create additional flexibility.
