Dick Webster Region

1 Grace v. 8 Nasheed

Grace 53%

Nasheed 47%

Last year’s runner up is putting together a strong play for the cup this year, but Swinford put up a strong showing for her first time. Ultimately, Grace had the Eye of the Tiger in the first round. However, the Round 1 winner of the battle of the opposites, Senator Nasheed, can bring her social media game when she puts her mind to it. Grace has the advantage, and will be helped by this being spring break. If session was in during this round, the senator might bring the pressure.

13 Fitzwater v. 5 Blunt

Fitzwater 54%

Blunt 46%

Fitzwater pulls the big upset while Messenger was vacationing, but he now must go head-to-head against the most successful family in Missouri Republican political history. Can we see the 13 seed continue his momentum? Will Blunt bring in any celebrity endorsers to shut the door and reach the sweet 16? We will find out before voting ends on Wednesday.

3 Kinder v. 11 Jackson

Kinder 52%

Jackson 48%

Well, Kinder is dialed in and won the SEMO grudge match in the first round, while David Jackson won the Pelopidas Bowl over the “King of All Media” Tim Jones. In a twist of fate, two of the Republican Party’s heavyweights square off in a battle for a cup named after David Barklage. Kinder has the experience and is the man, who like Trump, wins wins wins, but Jackson can bring his new school tactics. This is one of our favorite 2nd round match ups.

7 Pfeifer v. 15 Panettiere

Pfeifer 49.62%

Panettiere 50.38%

Many of us were already thinking Mr. Callow was the only man who could stop Brian Grace from winning the Webster Region, but the man from KC pulled off the biggest upset in #BarklageCup history. Now is a showdown in the KC Corral with Danny Pfeifer, who defeated his own St. Louis Democrat in Braxton Payne. This one is tough to predict as they are both in their first #BarklageCup, both from KC, and both know their way around a twitter account.

Jim Mathewson Region

1 Rowden v. 8 Cierpiot

Rowden 51%

Cierpiot 49%

The defending champion will be tested by the House Floor Leader who defeated Rep. McGaugh in a close contest. If the Floor Leader plans to move to the previous question into the sweet 16, he may need to check out Twitter for Dummies at the Lee’s Summit library. However, will Rowden’s senate race distract him from defending his crown and see the #BarklageCup on display above Cierpiot’s 1962 model Zenith 500?

4 Mazur v. 5 Cornejo

Mazur 47%

Cornejo 53%

Is Mazur losing his mojo? Patrick Lynn pulled an all-time gutsy move by suspending his campaign right out of the gate, and nearly beat the former founder. He had better get it together as Rep. Cornejo has been upping his social media game since last year. This should be a battle of sarcasm, and one of the best 2nd round matches. Personally, we will be disappointed if we don’t get some wall jokes thrown at the leader of the hispanic legislative caucus.

3 Jones v. 6 Charton

Jones 45%

Charton 55%

What a close one with Tishaura Jones edging out Senator Kraus! Now she has to deal with the man who can move internet voting tournaments as well as he can move the media, Scott Charton. He seems to have really struck a chord with his campaign messaging involving bacon and beer, but it will be interesting to see if he can make it work against the lady known by her first name, like Madonna and Cher…Tishaura. By the way, I guess we will see if Charton has any unpaid parking tickets.

7 Lakin v. 2 Rosenbaum

Lakin 41%

Rosenbaum 59%

Well, this matchup completes the Mathewson Region and it’s the first time we can remember when a first round all went to the higher seeds. Lakin and Rosenbaum brought convincing victories in the first round, but Victory Digital will be strained to compete with the man who has collected more internet 64 person bracket political personality tournament votes than anyone in history. Further Rosenbaum just got a retweet from Bill Goldberg. Some guys have all the luck.

McKenna Region

1 Dueker v. 9 Hancock

Dueker 56%

Hancock 44%

Well, we see why it’s called Hancock and Kelley, not Kelley and Hancock after the Republican brought home a first round victory. Now it’s the battle of the KMOXers when he squares off with former champion Jane Dueker. Oh how we would love to see Steve Moore’s bracket this round!

4 Richardson v. 12 Eaton

Richardson 48%

Eaton 52%

Alex Eaton came to play in the first round defeating one of the godfather’s of internet voting political tournaments, and now must face off against the Speaker. Richardson won the Speaker vs. Speaker first round battle with Steve Tilley, and now may need some of those slick memes that have been sprouting up on social media to defeat what could be a budding Cinderella story.

3 Reardon v. 11 Hafner

Reardon 50.67%

Hafner 49.33%

Reardon slipped through the first round, and now must face a man who brought an upset against another KMOXer. Reardon will likely have to up his game from the first round to advance, and those who enjoy bracketology can look to a potential Sweet 16 matchup against the official state senator of the Mark Reardon show, Eric Schmitt.

7 Koster v. 2 Schmitt

Koster 47%

Schmitt 53%

Could this not only be a second round matchup in the #BarklageCup, but also a preview to the 2020 gubernatorial race? They have both been clients of Barklage, both been state senators, and both voted for PQs. Now we get to see a potential prelude to an electoral battle. Candidly, ol’ chap, we got so excited about this second round matchup, that we nearly got pulled over for going 56 miles an hour through Foristell.

Harold Caskey Region

1 Slay v. 9 LaFaver

Slay 43%

LaFaver 57%

Slay is probably the most popular politician in the state among those with twitter accounts and rolls into the second round to face another I-70 series in Rep. LaFaver. LaFaver defeated his state senator in the first round, and now it seems that we are in store for some more “first legitimate world series champion” [SIC] heat coming from the west. An interesting bet would be if LaFaver loses, he wears a Cardinals hat Tuesday, and if Slay loses, he wears one of LaFaver’s bolo ties.

4 Shackelford vs. 13 Brinkley vs. 5 Schaefer

Schaefer 46%

Brinkley 28%

Shackelford 26%

Well, this is history for the #BarklageCup: a tie. And for this history-making event, Commissioner John Combest has made the following statement:

Ladies and gentlemen, my name is John Combest, commissioner of the #BarklageCup. Due to a first round tie between Megan Shackelford and Crystal Brinkley, I have ordered a second round three-way dance between the two of them and Senator Kurt Schaefer.”

Schaefer had to defeat his own consultant Scott Dieckhaus in the first round and now must win the first ever three-way dance to make it to the Sweet 16.

14 Baker v. 6 Haahr

Baker 54%

Haahr 46%

Baker came through in a big way in Round 1 defeating St. Louis radio pro McGraw Milhaven. However, in the second closest matchup of the 1st round, Haahr squeaked by Renee Hulshof. Haahr may be on upset watch as Baker seems to be bringing heat seeking Sweet 16 status in his first #BarklageCup appearance.

7 Cardetti v. 2 Kelly

Cardetti 39%

Kelly 61%

Chris Kelly won the first round matchup between two former legislators turned energy lobbyists, but now has to deal with top Democratic operative Jack Cardetti, who barely escaped the first round in a close battle with media maestro Brittany Burke. Now the two pros will burn up bandwidth in what will be a marquee second round battle.
