Capitol Commission holding wine tasting to hire conservator

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Missouri State Capitol Commission is holding a wine tasting and reception this evening to raise funds to commission an art conservator to conduct a comprehensive assessment and restoration plan of the interior murals and lunettes of the Capitol.

The Riedel Wine-Tasting and After-Hours Art Experience – “Sip to Save the Art” – will start at 6:00pm in the House chambers for the wine tasting, with a reception immediately afterwards in the Rotunda.

Guests will experience a tasting seminar hosted by a Riedel representative in the chamber. Access to Capitol galleries and the Missouri State Museum will be provided. The reception will highlight Missouri vintners and culinary talent, as well as the musical talents of Mike Michelson. Bob Priddy, author of The Art of the Missouri Capitol
History in Canvas, Bronze, and Stone and news director of Missourinet, will be present providing historical highlights of the art and artists of the Capitol building.

Dana Rademan Miller, Assistant Chief Clerk at the Missouri House of Representatives, shared her passion for the art in the Capitol with The Missouri Times, expressing how incredibly important it is to have the art restored. She hopes the event will expedite the restoration of the extensive works and help preserve Missouri’s rich history, especially the mural in the House chamber above the back gallery – one of the largest single canvas paintings in existence.

“It’s amazing to look at the mural when it is illuminated by the sunlight coming through the stained glass,” Miller said.

It is commonly known that the Capitol is very humid, which requires special maintenance for works such as the ones in the Capitol.
