JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Former U.S. Rep. Russ Carnahan handily defeated state Rep. Tommie Pierson and Winston Apple to win the Democratic primary for lieutenant governor.
Carnahan had strong name recognition as a former congressman and son of a former governor. He raised nearly $500,000.
Carnahan’s U.S. House district was eliminated in the latest round of redistricting and he went on to lose a 2012 primary election to U.S. Rep. Lacy Clay.
Carnahan will face Sen. Mike Parson in the general election.
