Sarah Huckabee Sanders joins Brunner campaign as senior advisor

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Sarah Huckabee Sanders will join John Brunner’s campaign for governor, he’s set to announce Wednesday.

Sanders will serve as a senior advisor to the campaign, and will be guiding and executing the campaign’s strategy on Faith Voter Outreach, the campaign told the Missouri Times.

“I am pleased to welcome Sarah Huckabee Sanders to our team. Sarah is an incredible political talent and brings a wealth of national and state experience to our campaign,” Brunner said in a statement. “She shares my vision of electing pro-life leaders throughout the country who are steadfast in defense of our Bill of Rights, especially our religious liberty and our 1st Amendment.”

Brunner has sought to make religious liberty a key issue of his campaign. He called for prayer when SJR 39 failed and religious liberty is one of the featured issues on his website.

Sanders has built a reputation as a rising star in Republican politics and was named one of Time magazine’s “40 under 40 Rising Stars in American Politics.” She’s also the daughter of former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.

“I know John Brunner will defend life and our religious freedoms, and will deliver results for Missourians,” Sanders said. “I am proud to join his campaign, and I’m ready to help bring Missourians of all faiths together to elect Mr. Brunner as the next governor of Missouri.”

Prior to his 2008 campaign, Sanders ran Huckabee’s political action committee before serving as national political director for his campaign. She also acted as campaign manager for Huckabee’s 2016 presidential campaign.

In 2010, she was campaign manager for then Rep. John Boozman, when he beat incumbent Democratic Sen. Blanche Lincoln by 21 points in Arkansas.

She’s also been a senior adviser to Gov. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota and Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas.

“Missourians need and deserve a leader for a change,” Sanders said. “John Brunner is a person of deep faith and conviction, a veteran, and the only candidate for governor on either side to be a life-long constitutional conservative, outsider, and businessperson. I know he will get real results, and get the job done for all Missourians.”

Brunner’s addition of Huckabee is just the latest news in a four-way primary that’s beginning to heat up with just two months remaining before Aug. 2 primary.
