JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – After attending a rally at the Blue Springs Harley Davidson for state Sen. Will Kraus, R-Lee’s Summit, Heidi Cruz, wife of Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz, flew to Jefferson City to file Missouri ballot access for her husband.
Just one problem: she left her form of identification on the plane.
Unflapped, Cruz and her staff immediately went to a scheduled meet-and-greet at the Capitol Plaza Hotel to speak with mid-Missourians before later returning to the Secretary of State’s office to officially file before it closed at 5 p.m.
At the event, Cruz gave a brief speech about the personal life of one of the Republican primary’s rising stars (her husband recently overtook businessman and nativist Donald Trump in Iowa polls). She spoke about how she met the future Texas senator, about his family and how that had shaped him into the person he is today.
“When I met Ted, I know that we shared the same principles,” she said. “His mother is very, very even-tempered. She’s a very calm person, very patient… His dad is a revolutionary voice for freedom, and we see all of those qualities in Ted.”
She did not mention the recent gaffe by the Cruz campaign that did in fact put his family front and center as the candidate attempts to coach his family through the filming of a campaign ad. Many media outlets covered the footage in an unflattering light, but at least one conservative site believes it showed him in a favorable light.
Ms. Cruz also expounded upon her husband’s conservative credentials, citing his belief in the Constitution, particularly the 1st, 2nd and 10th Amendments, as well as how he wants to focus on working families should he win the presidency.
“He is a candidate based on principle,” she said. “He’s running the same in the primary as he will in the general, if he’s fortunate enough to get there.”
