The Politically Speaking podcast is HOT

Even though House Speaker Jones had alluded to the uncertainty behind the House Bill 253 veto override, saying it on the podcast really seemed to draw some ears to what the St. Louis Beacon and KWMU have been doing every week with their podcast. They bring a different legislators on air every week to discuss the issues plaguing the minds of Missouri politicos. If you haven’t given it a try, be sure to do so. It’s on both the Beacon and St. Louis Public Radio’s websites.

The tax cut bill veto is HOT

When the governor brought forward the concerns about the prescription sales tax, Republicans acknowledged it was a mistake and discussed plans to refigure the outcome. When he brought up the withholding of a significant amount of education dollars, Republicans called it a scare tactic. Monday, when Nixon brought up the statements from credit agencies about potential damage to Missouri’s AAA credit rating, almost all Republicans stayed silent. It’s hard to not acknowledge that Nixon has put up a vocal fight up against $2 million (plus) of advertising dollars on the other side.

Giving out phone numbers during a public hearing is NOT

A few weeks ago during a hearing about the school transfers, Rep. Mark Parkinson gave out multiple phone numbers for Gov. Jay Nixon and his staff in a gym filled with hundreds of people. Parkinson called on the audience to tell Nixon they want a special session to figure out the transfer situation via the legislature, which Nixon later said he didn’t intend to do. Even though it’s been a while since that happened, it’s worth acknowledging that there’s a correct, appropriate way to go about expressing yourself, and then there’s the wrong way, which is what we saw that night.
