Initiative petitions filed to make legislature smaller and more urban

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – While politicians on both sides of the aisle in the state of Missouri often promise smaller government, most of them mean they would cut unnecessary spending or reform parts of government.

However, two initiative petitions will ask the people especially rural Missourians to limit their representation in the Missouri House in what would be a huge win for Missouri democrats.

Secretary of State Jason Kander approved two initiative petitions Tuesday that would reduce the number of members in the Missouri House of Representatives.

The two IPs, 2016-126 and 2016-127, were submitted by former Sen. John Lamping and attorney Jane Deuker, respectively. Both titles read:

Shall the Missouri Constitution be amended to reduce the number of members serving in the Missouri House of Representatives from 163 to 123 beginning in 2023?

Reduced legislative operating costs would result in annual estimated savings to state governmental entities of at least $3.3 million. Local governmental entities report no expected fiscal impact.

The two initiative petitions will need to be approved and circulated before possibly making it onto the ballot less than a year from now. If approved they would be the first step to the end or the republican super majority.
