The 2017 legislative session officially wrapped up on May 22, nearly one month ago, and Governor Eric Greitens has officially signed 10 bills into law. But more than 60 bills still await action from the freshman executive office holder. As of Monday, June 19, the governor has not vetoed any bills, despite calls for him to do so, especially in regard to the controversial SB 43. Greitens also has not signed off on the core bills dealing with the state’s budget. The Governor has 45 days from the end of session in which he may act, which places the deadline on July 15.
The Governor has four options:
- Sign the bill.
- Not sign the bill. If the governor does not sign the bills, they head to the Secretary of State, who then enrolls the bill as an authentic act, which puts it into law without any action from the governor.
- Veto the bill. (The General Assembly may override this veto by a two-thirds majority of both houses.)
- Veto line-items in an appropriation bill. (This applies to appropriation bills only – the Governor may choose to veto selected items within the bill, but it is still subject to veto overrides.)
