MO Dept. of Revenue director elected to Multistate Tax Commission Executive Committee

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Missouri Department of Revenue Director Joel Walters has been elected to the Executive Committee of the Multistate Tax Commission. The decision was made at its annual meeting, held in Boston in July.

The Commission is an intergovernmental state tax agency working on behalf of states and taxpayers to facilitate the equitable and efficient administration of state tax laws that apply to multistate and multinational enterprises.

“The MTC is a critical organization in the state tax arena, dedicated to ensuring that state tax laws work effectively for our states and businesses,” Walters said. “I am pleased Missouri has the opportunity to not only be involved at the national level, but to also take a leadership role in this important effort.”

The Commission was created in 1967 by the Multistate Tax Compact and is charged with: facilitating the proper determination of State and local tax liability of multistate taxpayers, including the equitable apportionment of tax bases and settlement of apportionment disputes; promoting uniformity or compatibility in significant components of tax systems; facilitating taxpayer convenience and compliance in the filing of tax returns and in other phases of tax administration; and avoiding duplicative taxation.

Walters first stepped into the role of Revenue’s director back in April of 2017 after being selected by then-Gov. Eric Greitens. Prior to his appointment, Walters led PricewaterhouseCoopers’ U.S. tax practice focused on foreign businesses investing into the U.S., where he worked on tax structures for companies around the world.

Walters holds an accounting degree from Gustavus Adolphus College, a law degree from the University of Minnesota, and an LL.M. degree from Georgetown University. He is also a CPA in Minnesota, New York, and Washington, D.C.
