Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals distributes more than 2K gallons of hand sanitizer to Missouri

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Mallinckrodt plc (NYSE: MNK), a St.Louis-based global biopharmaceutical company, today announced that it has reached a new milestone in its efforts to produce and distribute hand sanitizer to help combat COVID-19. Mallinckrodt Specialty Generics is manufacturing and donating hand sanitizer to emergency management operations located in regions in which it operates, including the state of Missouri.

The emergency management operations are distributing the sanitizer to public health and safety agencies. On a weekly basis, Mallinckrodt’s St. Louis plant is now manufacturing over 900 gallons of sanitizers for donation. To date, 583 cases (2,332 total gallons at four (4) one-gallon containers per case) have been distributed to Missouri alone.

“Understanding that the outbreak of COVID-19 would result in high demand and short supply of hand sanitizer, Mallinckrodt proactively converted an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufacturing line to produce hand sanitizer in order to protect both our essential workers as well as people in the communities we serve. We are proud to be expanding our sanitizer donation program to all OTPs, whose continuous treatment and care for those struggling with addiction has never been more challenging or essential,” said Spiro Gavaris, president of Mallinckrodt Specialty Generics.

The majority of the hand sanitizer donations have gone to the St. Louis region, the region hardest hit by COVID-19 in Missouri. The 242 cases have gone to St. Louis City and 296 cases have gone to St. Louis County to aid in their emergency response efforts. Due to the benefit of the donations, St. Louis City placed another request for 81 more cases. Various Opioid Treatment Programs and Missouri nonprofits (such as the Salvation Army) account for the remainder of the volume donated in Missouri. Mallinckrodt has shipped to more than 20 locations around the state beyond the St. Louis City/County emergency operations locations in response to the ongoing pandemic.

“As the pandemic started and we scaled up production of hand sanitizer for all of our manufacturing sites, it became clear that frontline providers had a critical need that our St. Louis plant could help fill,” said John Leonard, senior director, manufacturing, Specialty Generics. “It has been a true team effort to make the hand sanitizer available to those who need it the most during the current shortages.”

Mallinckrodt has promised to continue producing and donating hand sanitizer to help Missourians stay safe and healthy so long as the pandemic endures.
