Gov. Nixon signs bill allowing taxpayers to contribute income tax refunds towards MOST college savings accounts

Governor also signs several other education bills, including legislation increasing access to speech language pathologists and audiologists

JEFFERSON CITY – Gov. Jay Nixon today signed into law several bills relating to education including Senate Bill 366, allowing taxpayers to elect to contribute an amount of at least $25 of their income tax refund to the taxpayer’s selected MOST–Missouri’s 529 College Savings Plan account(s).

“Over the past six years, we’ve worked tirelessly to make college more affordable and make state government more consumer-friendly, and this bill advances both of these key priorities,” said Gov. Nixon. “I thank Treasurer Clint Zweifel for his strong stewardship of the MOST program and for his work, along with Senator Eric Schmitt and Representative Justin Alferman, to pass this worthwhile legislation.”

In addition to Senate Bill 366, the Governor also signed:

House Bill 41, removing obsolete language regarding the phase-in of the school funding formula;

House Bill 501, requiring certain content be included in course materials relating to human sexuality, sexually transmitted diseases and sexual predators, including online predators;

Senate Bill 93, which designates outdoor areas of public institutions of higher education as public forums where students may engage in “expressive activities;”

Senate Bill 104, regarding school board elections;

Senate Bill 107, relating to speech language pathologists and audiologists; and

Senate Bill 334, which allows Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis to offer graduate degrees. Gov. Nixon will join President Dr. Dwaun J. Warmack this Thursday (July 16) to sign a ceremonial copy of the bill and discuss other investments being made to improve opportunities for Harris-Stowe students.
