Release: Missouri Supreme Court Judge Richard B. Teitelman to Celebrate White Cane Day at Delta Gamma Center for Children with Visual Impairments

October 11, 2016, St. Louis, Missouri…On Monday, October 17, 2016 from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. the Delta Gamma Center for Children with Visual Impairments will welcome the Honorable Richard B. Teitelman, the first legally blind judge appointed to the Missouri Supreme Court.

Judge Teitelman will speak with community leaders about the important contributions made by individuals who are blind and visually impaired and to celebrate White Cane Day.

Diagnosed legally blind at the age of 13, Judge Teitelman will speak to ways that community leaders can help foster acceptance, inclusion and provide encouragement and support to those in their own communities, particularly children, who are blind and visually impaired. The event is co-sponsored by Lighthouse for the Blind-Saint Louis.

The mission of White Cane Day is to educate the world about blindness and how persons who are blind can live and work independently while giving back to their communities. World-wide, the long white cane is used by people who are blind or visually impaired as a tool for safe and reliable navigation. The white cane is a symbol of the user’s skills and talents, mobility and independence.

In honor of White Cane Day, the Delta Gamma Center for Children with Visual Impairments and Lighthouse for the Blind in St. Louis have chosen to celebrate the successes and achievements of individuals, and the boundless potential of children, who are blind and visually impaired.

Born in Philadelphia, Judge Teitelman earned a B.A. in Mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania. Moving to Missouri, he earned his law degree from Washington University School of Law in St. Louis. In 1998, he was appointed to the Missouri Court of Appeals by Governor Mel Carnahan, serving in that capacity until his appointment to the state Supreme Court by Governor Bob Holden in 2002. He is a former President of the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis, and has been honored by many professional and civic organizations.
