Who’s hot & who’s not: May 13 issue

hot

Sen. Ryan Silvey, R-Kansas City, is HOT

Kansas City Senator Ryan Silvey stopped the budget process Thursday with a multiple-hour filibuster. Silvey won the standoff with the appropriations chairman too as an agreement was made. Not your typical freshman senator — bold move.

Tax cuts are HOT

After several different versions passed each chamber, the landmark legislation finally passed last week and was sent to the governor. Some are saying it’s a guaranteed veto, but the General Assembly got their project accomplished.

Budget Chair Rick Stream and his Chief of Staff David Willis are HOT

After winning key concessions in conference last week and sending the budget to the governor, the House Budget Chair and his right-hand man have certainly done their due diligence.

Education reform is (still) NOT

It’s easy to suggest eduation reform through Senate Bill 125 — sponsored by Sen. Jamilah Nasheed and pushed by House Speaker Tim Jones — is not hot seeing as it failed on the House floor again Wednesday night — the second time the bill had been voted on, and defeated. Looks like it’s time to regroup.

“Right to Work” is NOT

We hear from all sides that “Right to Work” legislation out-whips education reform by 30-plus votes, yet it’s the last week of session and the bill hasn’t been brought up on the floor. Not very promising.
