Soros-backed group targets Wagner’s district with new ads

WASHINGTON, D.C. – An organization tied to Democratic mega donor George Soros has sent out a targeted ad to several Congressional districts around the country, including Missouri Congresswoman Ann Wagner, speaking against efforts by President Donald Trump to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act.

The American Bridge 21st Century Foundation describes itself as a progressive political organization “committed to holding Republicans accountable for their words and actions.” Soros, a major contributor to liberal and Democratic candidates and causes, has given the group at least $3 million since 2012, according to the Center for Responsive Politics’ site OpenSecrets.org.

The TV spot claims Americans are opposed to the Republican health care law that failed last month to make it through the House, and that the new health insurance plan presented by Republicans would be worse than their first iteration.

“Tell your member of Congress, ‘Don’t let Trump sell you out,'” the narrator states at the end.

Although Wagner is not mentioned specifically in the advertisement (none of the other targeted Congresspeople are), Wagner has supported Trump’s efforts to repeal the controversial health care law, including the first draft of the bill.

“I’ve been in the Oval Office with him as we’re whipping votes, as we’re working to try and get to a solution,” Wagner said on an episode of This Week in Missouri Politics earlier this month. “I am absolutely committed to repealing and replacing Obamacare, and I believe we’re going to get there as a House and as a Congress.”

Many of the other targeted representatives are thought to be running for higher offices and are from split districts that voted for Trump, despite siding with former President Barack Obama in previous elections. Wagner is also thought to be highly likely to run for U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill’s seat in the Senate.
